South Hampshire MVT
Area Secretary Paul Edwards Email: [email protected]
The South Hampshire Area is a local branch of the MVT and has members who share the aims of the Charitable Trust which was established for the purpose of restoring and preserving military vehicles of historical interest including the preservation of books, drawings, documents, sound and visual recordings, films, photographs and other media and ephemera relating to such vehicles.
MVT members vehicles include the well-known Jeep through to tanks, transporters, lorries, Land Rovers, motor bikes, the humble folding bicycle and range from pre-First World War to the present day.
In fulfilling our charitable objectives, we exhibit our vehicles at various public shows and events instilling in others the role these vehicles have played in the historic context of world conflict, and endeavour to ensure our younger generations are aware of our heritage and the debt we owe to all branches of the armed forces.
All members are proud of the standard of their vehicles and often this is reflected in the frequent requests for vehicles for film and TV work, charitable and commemorative events.
Notwithstanding the support of local shows, members will often travel to national MV shows and militaria sales up and down the country to exhibit and touch base with friends and colleagues in the hobby. In early June members will usually be found travelling with MV’s to Normandy in the annual pilgrimage to commemorate the WW2 landing beaches and historic sites in France.
Throughout the year members are encouraged and supported by the Area Secretary to organise road runs in their corners of the county. These MV road runs include THE NUT CRACKER run during the Christmas period giving members the opportunity to meet and seasonal greet whilst splashing some oil around the crankcase. THE SPITFIRE RUN visits the ghost factories and facilities that existed in Southampton ably assisted with running commentary from our friends at “Spitfire Makers” and a moving tribute to the final resting place of the Spitfire designer R.J.Mitchel in nearby Stoneham cemetery.
As the weather improves THE NEW FOREST AIRFIELD TOUR OF DUTY visits some of the 12 operational airfields that existed during WW2 whilst swinging by Ashley bombing range where the crater of largest bomb (nicknamed Ten Tonne Tess) was dropped on our shores by our own forces, can still be seen today. The end of season BUNKER BASH road run takes us through the picturesque countryside of Hampshire to Breamore House used by Allied troops in the lead up to D-Day before members try their luck and good judgement at crossing a nearby river ford, followed by off roading one of Hampshire’s finest green lanes before ending the day at a nearby public house for a warm pint of British ale. All good road runs in the company of great friends.
The South Hampshire Area meet on the 2nd Wednesday of the month, 8.00pm Salon bar at the Golden Lion PO17 6EB in the village of Southwick (Pronounced Suthwyk) north of Portsmouth, Hampshire. Come and sample a pint of Old Dick or Liberation ale, served by our host Greg and Jane in the same bar once used as the unofficial Officers' Mess for the senior Allied Commanders who were planning OPERATION OVERLORD at nearby Southwick House.
During the summer months we often up sticks from The Golden Lion in Southwick and have Rolling Meetings with the trucks at various locations around Hampshire, that has some historic context and, in a bid to reach out to those Members on our borders. Please do visit our Facebook page and check where we will be next month or phone or email the Area Secretary for information.
We really are a friendly bunch and welcome guests.
