Emission-Based Parking Charges
The increase of digital parking systems requiring the use of apps or internet payments has allowed the introduction of "Emission-based car parking charges" in many areas. When a registration number is entered, algorithms use the emissions data for your vehicle to calculate charges. This means that people with higher polluting vehicles are being asked to pay significantly more to encourage a shift to use cleaner, more sustainable travel. Their prevalence is increasing and there are no exemptions for historical vehicles. Each Council is responsible for their schemes so campaigning to exempt historic vehicles is piecemeal and very difficult. HGVs are the worst affected.
Places such as Bath and Lambeth charge a great deal more for higher tax band cars and some put on an additional charge for diesel vehicles.
According to the Guardian "Owners of the most polluting cars can expect to pay more than twice as much as cleaner cars. There are now 26 different charges to park for an hour in Lambeth, depending on a car’s tax band and whether there is a diesel surcharge. The cost of a parking bay near Waterloo station in south London now ranges between £6.30 and £13.23 an hour, with payment made by an app."
