The Simon Johnson Memorial trophy is named in honour of our much missed chairman of many years. Simon was a great listener and the first to recognise those who had made a special contribution to the Trust furthering our aims as a charity or helping others. In recognition of his outstanding work as our Chairman, it was decided (with his wife Nina’s permission) to create a new award to be given annually to the individual or group who have 'made a special effort or contribution to the MVT and to help further its aims’
The award for 2025 went to Robert Wiles, Howard Witt and Nigel Martin, who drove three Jeeps over 2000 miles across the battlefields of Europe. The trip took 21 days of driving visiting cemeteries, visiting memorials, taking part in Mayoral events and visiting battlefields. They followed the route of the 13/18th Royal Hussars after D day across Europe. They came up with the unique idea of selling a days ride in a wartime Jeep across the battlefields of Europe to raise money for the ‘Light Dragoon Charitable Trust’ this they achieved by raising £20,000 having sold almost 60 day rides in a jeep. You can read a fuller account of their trip and some very interesting statistics in Windscreen magazine.
