MVTDDAY24
June 6th 1944, marked the start of the greatest seaborne invasion in history and 80 years later, milions of people gathered together in Normandy to mark the anniversary of the D-Day landings and start of the Battle for Normandy.
A record number of MVT members attended the commemorations; over 1000 people and an impressive range of over 350 vehicles including motorcycles, staff cars, jeeps, command cars, ambulances, trucks, tracked vehicles and armour were there, attending a wide range of commemorations, including large national events such as the parade at Bayeux and Arromanches There were also scores of smaller gatherings, commemorations and acts of remembrance during the week which our members attended and we were invited by numerous museums and organisations to provide vehicles for their events. For full reports and details of the events attended see our MVTDDAY website.
The MVT put together a comprehensive package of support to help our members get the most out of their visit, whether they were new to Normandy or seasoned travellers. But our work did not end when the 80th Anniversary passed. With fewer and fewer surviving WW2 Veterans, it is becoming even more important for us to keep our "mechanical veterans" alive to ensure the sacrifice and contribution of the "greatest generation" who began the liberation of Europe and the end of Nazi tyranny is never forgotten and is remembered, not just every 5 years when the larger "Liberation Festivals" happen but every year and even in between.
As a legacy of our 2024 Normandy Experience, we have refocussed the MVTDDAY website to provide useful information and support for anyone wishing to visit the DDay Landing Beaches and further inland, where the Battle of Normandy raged for a further 3 months. We have also been able to add to our MVT member benefits with year round discounts on any route with Brittany Ferries, making it easier, cheaper and safer to make your own trips to Normandy.
We also commit to supporting trips abroad to commemorate anniversaries in the future.
