ORIGINS
Military development of the Mercedes G Wagen for the Singapore Armed Forces. Essentially a Land Rover Series 3 Light weight air portable equivalent. Removeable soft top, drop down screen, Roll bar (removeable). Used as a Recce vehicle or general purpose truck

MODIFICATIONS
OWNING A G Wagen
Low power. Best to use a cetane boost fuel (BP Ultimate Diesel) and an additive. With these get 65-70 mph...without 55mph.
Very reliable and robust engine.
4 speed manual gear change.
Very simple and easy DIY maintenance.
2 large fuel filters in engine bay and a smaller in tank simple mesh filter
15 minutes to strip off doors, soft top and drop screen
The short wheel base is easier to live with.

BUYING A G Wagen
These RHD Singapore vehicles have been well maintained by their military but they usually arrive with very low mileage but no service history Change all fluids asap. Drain diesel tank as the diesel is prone to diesel algae. Clean the in-tank mesh filter and fill with fresh diesel and an algae killing additive.
Make sure it has a UK MoT. It may need a rear fog light. The front indicators will allow a side flash so there is no requirement for additional side indicators.
The tyres are often past their best so replace with BF Goodrige All Terrain AT's
Check the 3 acrylic windows in the soft top as they will have suffered UV degradation. I had a local boat company replace mine as they were used to replacing windows on boar canopies.
The vehicle usually arrives with only the bottom
of removable doors. The top half can be sourced from France as they are the same as the Peugeot P4.
Underseal and waxoyl. Known rust areas are the lower rear area behind the rear wheels
All parts are obtainable by Mercedes but they are expensive so use alternatives IE £105 for 2 x V belts from Mercedes: £15 from Autodoc.
