1943 Dodge Command Car owned by Peter Yates
ex French army, fully restored

Built at Ford’s Dallas plant in May 1945 under contract 20-018-4920, this was one of 5,936 Jeeps built that month and allocated serial number 269286 which still appears on the original data plate and chassis frame.
After consulting various websites and books the hood number was found to be 20735037 which ties in nicely with the contract as the 4,940 Jeep built that month.
It was delivered to the U S Army on Friday 22nd May of that year but as yet it’s not known where.
Subsequent history after May 1945 is a little scarce too but it was purchased at sometime by the Norwegian Army who operated it right up until the late 1980’s when it was one of a batch of Jeeps sold off as surplus and obtained by Atlantic Automotive in Kent during late 1989. Shortly after it was registered in the UK with the number plate WSU 673.
The previous owner bought it on 21st December 1989 and used it as a second car in and around London for the next 20 years.
However with work commitments and a lack of garage space he very reluctantly sold it in October 2009.
It has been well looked after mechanically for the past 20 years by Dallas Autos but unfortunately London weather and time have not been kind to it cosmetically and an ongoing schedule of re spraying and TLC is underway.
With my aviation interest in mind I decided to re mark her in 8th Air Force markings and they represent the 91st Bomb Group, 324th Bomb squadron based at Bassingbourn in Cambridgeshire. The 324th of course being the unit that flew Memphis Belle.
